An exploding area of the market are designs which depart from traditional windshields – such as those found in center console designs – incorporating fully contoured windshields which are aerodynamically designed to keep the wind off the operator while keeping clear of the angler. Our windshields are molded to perfection and offer exceptional visibility with minimum aberration or distortion. The success of a windshield lies in the design of the console and we strongly suggest in-depth consultation at the console design stage.

Center console windshields are an AcryliCo specialty which we have perfected in such a manner they are formed to fit the console very precisely, following the lines of the console or T-top according to the wishes of the boat builder.

AcryliCo's Quality Assurance Program is the key reason why the rate of returns has been consistently held below the 0.5% mark, with discrepancies an extremely rare occurrence. Once a windshield is tooled up and the First Article Fit is approved, the subsequent production will remain remarkably identical from the first to the last delivered lots. Any discrepancy is investigated thoroughly, and corrective action promptly implemented and applied to all future productions and R&D.

As boats get larger, so do their windshields, and the loads they will be subjected to during the course of time. Tooling becomes fundamental to creating these complex shapes, and many manufacturers are now using fully CNC'd master tooling which not only offers the opportunity for perfect symmetry but also allows the incorporation of subtle curves which dramatically enhance the strength of the product

Boat designers are encouraged to maximize the capabilities of acrylics as opposed to glass; in truth, due to its molecular properties, polymers can achieve far more radical shapes and compound curves, which are simply beyond the capabilities of glass.

Center console windshields are an AcryliCo specialty which we have perfected in such a manner they are formed to fit the console very precisely, following the lines of the console or T-top according to the wishes of the boat builder.

In recent years, center console boats are getting bigger and faster. This has brought into play the wind factor as never before, since a boat cruising over sixty miles and hour will not only be subject to a strong wind forces, but also eddies which impact shapes and surroundings. This is why AcryliCo has utilized CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) to predict the fluid movement of wind, thus perfecting a shape to maximize wind management and ultimately the comfort of the crew.

More recently, full enclosure windshields have become all the rage and AcryliCo has already produced some outstanding highly complex concepts. These windshields are the ultimate challenge in terms of production since they require a very high degree of technical know-how and proficient skill during the manufacturing process, in such a manner the finished product is not only a thing of beauty, but also a windshield which includes all the inherent quality features AcryliCo is famed for, such as scratch-resistance, minimal distortion, aerodynamic efficiency, exceptional durability, and outstanding value.

A trend following semi-enclosed glazed center consoles, is to apply acrylic inserts to existing design T-top structures to achieve a similar result. The polymer inserts can be formed to follow curvature of the console and will accept a windshield wiper equal to glazing, yet at a far better price in tooling and product.

PERFORMANCE BOAT WINDSHIELDS

AcryliCo feels comfortable on the cutting edge of the powerboat industry and is constantly exploring and researching those areas which generate innovation.

This is why for the past two years we have sponsored boats such as STIHL in the Superboat racing series and The Hulk in the Superboat Stock racing series; both achieving National Championships in 2014.

The transparencies on these boats must guarantee complete protection of the crew, even when confronted in the most dire of circumstances. A roll over or similar extreme out of the ordinary circumstance in excess of 100 mph is a challenge not to be trifled with. For some of these craft the windshield and windows are an integral part of the structure of the boat and must resist unimaginable torsional forces. Racing has brought us constant evolution, from stepped hulls to catamarans; each a quantum leap in technology eventually finding its way down to even the most humble of water craft.

Traditionally, boats evolved through physical models and on the water testing. Nowadays it is possible to know the performance and characteristics of a boat through Computational Fluid Dynamics software without ever having the need to build a physical model. In a similar fashion, racing permits AcryliCo to study aerodynamics.

Most boats are of a size and performance where wind plays a key factor in stability. The protection of the driver and passengers from this wind flow is a complex calculation influenced by the shape of the console, the proximity and angle of a T Top, gunnel placement and the shape of the foredeck. Engineering strives to offer the crew the perfect compromise of outdoor maritime experience while at the same time setting limits on the discomfort of excess.

Boat racing is a fascinating and somewhat obscure endeavor for the cognoscenti. It is unlike any other sport in the world; a place where skill, technology and sheer will reigns in a milieu of unimaginable danger. This is the very heart of power-boating.

This is where AcryliCo wants to be.

 

 STRETCHED ACRYLICS

performance boats 1Long overdue, stretched acrylics have recently become a far more viable alternative for the creation of performance boat windshields. Starting off as a cast acrylic block, this special acrylic is then heated to very specific temperatures and machine-stretched bi-axially. The result is an incredibly tough and rigid sheet, so much so, it is used in high performance fighter jets, such as the F-18. Similarly, all exterior windows on passenger jet airliners are created using stretched acrylic.
 
Among the many advantages of stretched acrylic (MIL-PRF-25690), are rigidity under impact, toughness and perfect optical visibility. The drawbacks are the elevated cost of the raw materials and tooling. Critical to the success on stretched acrylic, is the correct mounting of the transparency in the test rig. This is of prime importance to ensure accurate temperature and stress distribution, particularly where thermal stresses are involved.

Furthermore, stretched acrylic is very hard to form because of its complex physical properties. However, AcryliCo has a great deal of experience working with stretched acrylics gained through our sister company, Control Logistics, where we manufacture almost exclusively from this material for the aeronautical industries and are a prime supplier to the US Department of defense.

 

POLYCARBONATES

performance boats 4When it comes to competition and performance boats, polycarbonate windshields are a necessary requirement due to their superior temperature and impact resistance.
 
Polycarbonate windshields do however, have their pitfalls. Their enormous flexibility means apertures have to be kept to a minimum size and a great deal of thought must be given to their attachments. The other problem with polycarbonate is that it is produced through a process of extrusion and therefore the remaining cast lines make optical quality a challenge.
 
Polycarbonate windshields and canopies also have a low hardness rating and are thus susceptible to scratch easily. Furthermore, prolonged exposure to ultra violet rays causes degradation (yellowing), and hence requires hard-coating after being formed.
 
Hard coating has come a long way and substantially improved in recent years. A good example of polycarbonate hard coating can be found on the headlights of modern cars. In the late 80’s manufacturers began to produce headlights formed from polycarbonates, and introduced as an alternative to glass. Despite the advantages of polycarbonate, it was noted the constant exposure to UV degenerated the coating, turning the headlights yellow. However, by the mid 90’s hard coating had being introduced and so modern headlights rarely suffer from this problem.
